Devon is a magical place. I am fortunate to have had many amazing experiences, won top ribbons and made great memories while competing on numerous horses at Dressage at Devon throughout my career.
Devon is close enough to home that our non-horsey friends and family can take a drive to watch you compete, unlike the long haul to many of the other shows. It is the show where you see people from the circuit in Florida, as well as the local New Jersey friends and trainers. We are a fun group, cheering and rooting for each other like a team.
Dressage at Devon is also a big venue and can challenge certain horses’ flight instincts because of the atmosphere, the clapping and energy that each arena presents. Whether it’s in the crowded warm up area, the Wheeler Arena with spectators gathered along the fence line, or the infamous Dixon Oval, where the crowd sits high in the grand stands – the atmosphere will challenge horses that are spooky or anxious.
I particularly like this extra vibe and energy when my horse is completely focused on me, as it can give them a little extra pizzazz in their movement. This past week at DAD, my horse Elvis had a lot to take in, but he was really tuned into me and I was thrilled with his response each day in the two different rings. That Devon energy worked to our benefit this year as we came away with three second place awards in the FEI CDI3* Prix St Georges, Intermediate I and Freestyle!
This show was a great milestone for Elvis HI, who I own jointly with Ailene Cascio. It was his first year doing the entire small tour, the Freestyle and this was his first CDI. I can’t think of a better place to do our first CDI than Devon, as it was also my horse Rosmarin’s first CDI as well. Elvis and I had some of our most harmonious rides this past weekend, which made me realize he is ready to move up to the next level.
I am very thankful to Ailene, my sponsors, our team and all of my supporters. I am also grateful for the organizers and volunteers who helped Dressage at Devon run smoothly, as well as the quality of judging which is always held to a high standard. We are looking forward to going back next year – and as time will tell, perhaps we’ll be ready to do the Grand Prix! ~ Kim
